# Configuring Advanced Context

> Tune the context an Apologist AI Console Agent receives with each prompt

Context is everything the Agent is told at the moment it answers, beyond the question itself and its baseline instructions.

## Purpose

Control how much source material, conversation history, and situational awareness reaches the model on every prompt, and write the instructions that tell the Agent what to do with each.

## Prerequisites

* A configured Agent with instructions written. See [Customizing Instructions](/console/configuration/customizing-instructions).
* Sources curated for the Agent. See [Curating Sources](/console/configuration/curating-sources).
* An understanding of your credit budget, since three settings on this page add per-prompt cost.

## How Context Is Assembled

Every setting in this guide contributes to one thing: the system prompt the Agent receives with each request. The Agent starts from its baseline instructions, then appends each block of context in a fixed order:

1. Language handling
2. Scripture handling
3. Bible tool usage
4. Inline citations
5. Web search tool usage
6. Source handling
7. Miscellaneous context

Two consequences follow, and both explain behavior that otherwise looks like a bug.

**Each block is conditional.** Language instructions are appended only when a language resolves for the request. Source instructions are appended only when the search actually returned passages. Web search instructions are appended only when Live Web Search is on. A block whose field is empty is skipped entirely, and an empty field is not the same as a field containing default text.

**Later blocks are read last.** Where two blocks give competing guidance, the Agent tends to weight what it read most recently. Keep each block to its own concern rather than restating a rule across several.

These pages edit the Agent's default Responder, the AI configuration attached to the Agent. If your Agent has the Responders capability turned on, the Behavior, Knowledge, and Context pages are hidden and you configure each Responder directly instead.

## Steps

#### Set How Much Source Material Reaches the Model

Select **Agents** in the left-hand navigation, open your Agent, then choose **Knowledge** from the row of pages across the top and select the **Advanced** tab.

<img src="https://fdr-prod-docs-files-public.s3.us-east-1.amazonaws.com/apologist.docs.buildwithfern.com/3d4f7fd5fd542dcd88aa0b503af739624df232a10c5ba8a3efcbe226f62dd044/docs/assets/images/console/agent-knowledge-advanced-tab-light.png?X-Amz-Algorithm=AWS4-HMAC-SHA256&X-Amz-Content-Sha256=UNSIGNED-PAYLOAD&X-Amz-Credential=AKIA6KXJSKKNFOCF7G4B%2F20260806%2Fus-east-1%2Fs3%2Faws4_request&X-Amz-Date=20260806T092849Z&X-Amz-Expires=604800&X-Amz-Signature=eb39001d6765c4dc95ebab9d73f4da3cd15aafe32782c45956d17633da0bed85&X-Amz-SignedHeaders=host&x-amz-checksum-mode=ENABLED&x-id=GetObject" alt="The Advanced tab of the Seeker Agent's Knowledge page in Console, showing Max Sources set to 3, a Relevance Threshold slider at 50 percent, and a Source Handling Instructions field containing a SOURCE HANDLING block ending in the passages merge tag." />

<img src="https://fdr-prod-docs-files-public.s3.us-east-1.amazonaws.com/apologist.docs.buildwithfern.com/e4b664cc43e674acbcd390499616fa9f7154b7ed0e937978465303578c1bb90f/docs/assets/images/console/agent-knowledge-advanced-tab-dark.png?X-Amz-Algorithm=AWS4-HMAC-SHA256&X-Amz-Content-Sha256=UNSIGNED-PAYLOAD&X-Amz-Credential=AKIA6KXJSKKNFOCF7G4B%2F20260806%2Fus-east-1%2Fs3%2Faws4_request&X-Amz-Date=20260806T092849Z&X-Amz-Expires=604800&X-Amz-Signature=801fd7c130cb8235e950bec7bbe654013607c1f3bda39dd66c1b490a0b16e065&X-Amz-SignedHeaders=host&x-amz-checksum-mode=ENABLED&x-id=GetObject" alt="The Advanced tab of the Seeker Agent's Knowledge page in Console, showing Max Sources set to 3, a Relevance Threshold slider at 50 percent, and a Source Handling Instructions field containing a SOURCE HANDLING block ending in the passages merge tag." />

Three controls decide what the Agent has to work with:

* **Max Sources** caps how many source passages are included, from 0 to 25. More passages give the Agent more to draw on and make each prompt more expensive. Setting it to 0 stops source material reaching the Agent at all.
* **Relevance Threshold** is the minimum relevance score a passage must reach to be included, from 0 to 1 and displayed as a percentage. Raise it when the Agent cites material that is only loosely related. Lower it when the Agent says it cannot find anything on topics you know are covered.
* **Source Handling Instructions** tells the Agent what to do with those passages. The `{passages}` merge tag is where they are inserted, so the tag must be present for the Agent to see them at all.

The two numbers work against each other. A high **Max Sources** with a high **Relevance Threshold** often yields fewer passages than the cap suggests, because the threshold filters them out first.

#### Decide Whether the Agent May Search the Web

Choose the **Behavior** page and select the **Abilities** tab.

<img src="https://fdr-prod-docs-files-public.s3.us-east-1.amazonaws.com/apologist.docs.buildwithfern.com/f2d6b9477238e1d7cead8ce78867b20618ea8756bf8963f005fc02d73e2eb5f9/docs/assets/images/console/agent-behavior-abilities-tab-light.png?X-Amz-Algorithm=AWS4-HMAC-SHA256&X-Amz-Content-Sha256=UNSIGNED-PAYLOAD&X-Amz-Credential=AKIA6KXJSKKNFOCF7G4B%2F20260806%2Fus-east-1%2Fs3%2Faws4_request&X-Amz-Date=20260806T092849Z&X-Amz-Expires=604800&X-Amz-Signature=c6f6b72a9e49dd84e1b463e57c959fd3c9e3b7d020edaeddcb78d21db37f192f&X-Amz-SignedHeaders=host&x-amz-checksum-mode=ENABLED&x-id=GetObject" alt="The Abilities tab of the Seeker Agent's Behavior page in Console with Enable Live Web Search turned on, showing Include Domains and Exclude Domains repeaters and a Web Search Tool Instructions field filled with the default WEB SEARCH TOOLS text." />

<img src="https://fdr-prod-docs-files-public.s3.us-east-1.amazonaws.com/apologist.docs.buildwithfern.com/fd1dfcd3912b9ebcd8e1c8ca3c7c0de15f6a39ac283a3396e53eab2a904db72a/docs/assets/images/console/agent-behavior-abilities-tab-dark.png?X-Amz-Algorithm=AWS4-HMAC-SHA256&X-Amz-Content-Sha256=UNSIGNED-PAYLOAD&X-Amz-Credential=AKIA6KXJSKKNFOCF7G4B%2F20260806%2Fus-east-1%2Fs3%2Faws4_request&X-Amz-Date=20260806T092849Z&X-Amz-Expires=604800&X-Amz-Signature=e268a7a368065817bd6ea6726cf02c1dad40c2f7996070843cf09b47b629f4b8&X-Amz-SignedHeaders=host&x-amz-checksum-mode=ENABLED&x-id=GetObject" alt="The Abilities tab of the Seeker Agent's Behavior page in Console with Enable Live Web Search turned on, showing Include Domains and Exclude Domains repeaters and a Web Search Tool Instructions field filled with the default WEB SEARCH TOOLS text." />

**Enable Live Web Search** lets the Agent look up current information when its own sources do not cover a question. Turning it on unlocks three further controls, all of which stay greyed out while it is off:

* **Include Domains** restricts searching to the domains you list. Leave it empty to allow all domains.
* **Exclude Domains** blocks specific domains. Use it to keep the Agent away from sites that conflict with your positions.
* **Web Search Tool Instructions** tells the Agent when to reach for search rather than answering from what it already has.

Turning the toggle on fills the instructions field with a working default, so you get sensible behavior before you change anything. Turning it back off clears that text again, but only if you have not edited it.

Live Web Search incurs an additional credit per prompt, charged on every prompt while the toggle is on, not only on prompts that actually trigger a search. Restricting domains does not reduce the cost.

#### Set How Much Conversation the Agent Remembers

Still on the **Behavior** page, select the **Memory** tab.

<img src="https://fdr-prod-docs-files-public.s3.us-east-1.amazonaws.com/apologist.docs.buildwithfern.com/1d1b935fe6174369f615758017ccfae27ddcb7bd1053eca64db4380fac02b28d/docs/assets/images/console/agent-behavior-memory-tab-light.png?X-Amz-Algorithm=AWS4-HMAC-SHA256&X-Amz-Content-Sha256=UNSIGNED-PAYLOAD&X-Amz-Credential=AKIA6KXJSKKNFOCF7G4B%2F20260806%2Fus-east-1%2Fs3%2Faws4_request&X-Amz-Date=20260806T092849Z&X-Amz-Expires=604800&X-Amz-Signature=932a5141ef888a3b5e8fb1de5874fa1622db1f3fd41aeccc3fea21801c413a63&X-Amz-SignedHeaders=host&x-amz-checksum-mode=ENABLED&x-id=GetObject" alt="The Memory tab of the Seeker Agent's Behavior page in Console, showing Max Memories set to 10 and a Persist Conversation Sources toggle turned off." />

<img src="https://fdr-prod-docs-files-public.s3.us-east-1.amazonaws.com/apologist.docs.buildwithfern.com/6e7cf194a1f6194b46ad6364571aad8ce65da4f09528afb66c82909536654a43/docs/assets/images/console/agent-behavior-memory-tab-dark.png?X-Amz-Algorithm=AWS4-HMAC-SHA256&X-Amz-Content-Sha256=UNSIGNED-PAYLOAD&X-Amz-Credential=AKIA6KXJSKKNFOCF7G4B%2F20260806%2Fus-east-1%2Fs3%2Faws4_request&X-Amz-Date=20260806T092849Z&X-Amz-Expires=604800&X-Amz-Signature=f8530ab9df3bd782e98b6c6516fde37fc3e2986d130661981e4bf9bedd0473f5&X-Amz-SignedHeaders=host&x-amz-checksum-mode=ENABLED&x-id=GetObject" alt="The Memory tab of the Seeker Agent's Behavior page in Console, showing Max Memories set to 10 and a Persist Conversation Sources toggle turned off." />

* **Max Memories** is how many previous prompt and response exchanges are passed back to the model, from 0 to 25. This is what lets someone ask a follow-up question without repeating themselves. Setting it to 0 makes every prompt independent, which suits a single-question kiosk and frustrates anyone holding a conversation.
* **Persist Conversation Sources** keeps the source passages found earlier in a conversation available for later turns. Without it, each turn searches afresh, and a follow-up question phrased vaguely may retrieve nothing useful.

Persist Conversation Sources incurs an additional cost of 2 credits per prompt, and raising **Max Memories** increases the size of every request. Both are worth paying for on a conversational Agent and wasted on one that answers standalone questions.

#### Adjust the Language Handling Instructions

Choose the **Context** page and select the **Language** tab.

<img src="https://fdr-prod-docs-files-public.s3.us-east-1.amazonaws.com/apologist.docs.buildwithfern.com/72e0640f609317c650d06dc5603f1574763002761605762d48ba55f127dba0e2/docs/assets/images/console/agent-context-language-tab-light.png?X-Amz-Algorithm=AWS4-HMAC-SHA256&X-Amz-Content-Sha256=UNSIGNED-PAYLOAD&X-Amz-Credential=AKIA6KXJSKKNFOCF7G4B%2F20260806%2Fus-east-1%2Fs3%2Faws4_request&X-Amz-Date=20260806T092849Z&X-Amz-Expires=604800&X-Amz-Signature=d9965d0226e1b51e894237f1ee5984c19a91daaee96072244324a0d71b5327de&X-Amz-SignedHeaders=host&x-amz-checksum-mode=ENABLED&x-id=GetObject" alt="The Language tab of the Seeker Agent's Context page in Console, showing a Language Handling Instructions field containing a LANGUAGE HANDLING block that uses the language merge tag, above a Merge Tags reference listing that tag." />

<img src="https://fdr-prod-docs-files-public.s3.us-east-1.amazonaws.com/apologist.docs.buildwithfern.com/ccb16070b3b977ee876fbe90dcad174108191df6704aa66ada89cec635ab01e9/docs/assets/images/console/agent-context-language-tab-dark.png?X-Amz-Algorithm=AWS4-HMAC-SHA256&X-Amz-Content-Sha256=UNSIGNED-PAYLOAD&X-Amz-Credential=AKIA6KXJSKKNFOCF7G4B%2F20260806%2Fus-east-1%2Fs3%2Faws4_request&X-Amz-Date=20260806T092849Z&X-Amz-Expires=604800&X-Amz-Signature=59b0841a561fff1315237da4c3782504cdfdda1b950fa54fd3b3b12eb4f433f2&X-Amz-SignedHeaders=host&x-amz-checksum-mode=ENABLED&x-id=GetObject" alt="The Language tab of the Seeker Agent's Context page in Console, showing a Language Handling Instructions field containing a LANGUAGE HANDLING block that uses the language merge tag, above a Merge Tags reference listing that tag." />

**Language Handling Instructions** tells the Agent how to behave with respect to language, and it supports the `{language}` merge tag, which resolves to the language the user is working in.

This field is prefilled with a working default. Edit it only when you need behavior the default does not give you, such as instructing the Agent to keep certain proper nouns untranslated.

This is a different setting from the supported and default languages covered in [Configuring Languages](/console/configuration/configuring-languages). Those decide which languages the Agent offers. This decides what the Agent is told about the language once one is chosen.

#### Adjust the Scripture Handling Instructions

Still on the **Context** page, select the **Scripture** tab.

<img src="https://fdr-prod-docs-files-public.s3.us-east-1.amazonaws.com/apologist.docs.buildwithfern.com/9c5eb44ab94e188a8477dc35114e2102c9823a4955ba11531f7ca3bd45180d46/docs/assets/images/console/agent-context-scripture-tab-light.png?X-Amz-Algorithm=AWS4-HMAC-SHA256&X-Amz-Content-Sha256=UNSIGNED-PAYLOAD&X-Amz-Credential=AKIA6KXJSKKNFOCF7G4B%2F20260806%2Fus-east-1%2Fs3%2Faws4_request&X-Amz-Date=20260806T092849Z&X-Amz-Expires=604800&X-Amz-Signature=95549ebba18537b4b93a7a0a66488cd56dfc2aed2cd38aecd1a75aa27801d542&X-Amz-SignedHeaders=host&x-amz-checksum-mode=ENABLED&x-id=GetObject" alt="The Scripture tab of the Seeker Agent's Context page in Console, showing a Scripture Handling Instructions field containing a BIBLE VERSE HANDLING block that uses the bible merge tag, above a Merge Tags reference listing that tag." />

<img src="https://fdr-prod-docs-files-public.s3.us-east-1.amazonaws.com/apologist.docs.buildwithfern.com/8b0f4f03a47373ff99fe01bb85b66178bbe7ff48d82bc3b797063e570b3be7d1/docs/assets/images/console/agent-context-scripture-tab-dark.png?X-Amz-Algorithm=AWS4-HMAC-SHA256&X-Amz-Content-Sha256=UNSIGNED-PAYLOAD&X-Amz-Credential=AKIA6KXJSKKNFOCF7G4B%2F20260806%2Fus-east-1%2Fs3%2Faws4_request&X-Amz-Date=20260806T092849Z&X-Amz-Expires=604800&X-Amz-Signature=49ce73ecef3960af06898045b295946ec7287ae91c3b3c3c3752a69934ecc94e&X-Amz-SignedHeaders=host&x-amz-checksum-mode=ENABLED&x-id=GetObject" alt="The Scripture tab of the Seeker Agent's Context page in Console, showing a Scripture Handling Instructions field containing a BIBLE VERSE HANDLING block that uses the bible merge tag, above a Merge Tags reference listing that tag." />

**Scripture Handling Instructions** governs how the Agent quotes and references scripture, and it supports the `{bible}` merge tag, which resolves to the translation in use for the request.

This is where you state house rules on scripture, such as how many verses a response should cite or whether the Agent should give the reference before the quotation. Which translations are available is set separately, in [Configuring Bible Translations](/console/configuration/configuring-bible-translations).

#### Give the Agent Situational Awareness

Still on the **Context** page, select the **Miscellaneous** tab.

<img src="https://fdr-prod-docs-files-public.s3.us-east-1.amazonaws.com/apologist.docs.buildwithfern.com/b06841f4c0eeb1efdd576a83c6384a8a942f44b42f2fdd958d814fb42fc48a26/docs/assets/images/console/agent-context-miscellaneous-tab-light.png?X-Amz-Algorithm=AWS4-HMAC-SHA256&X-Amz-Content-Sha256=UNSIGNED-PAYLOAD&X-Amz-Credential=AKIA6KXJSKKNFOCF7G4B%2F20260806%2Fus-east-1%2Fs3%2Faws4_request&X-Amz-Date=20260806T092849Z&X-Amz-Expires=604800&X-Amz-Signature=55c1d82d84406b20b514da267a215c40653715e3002338c9b55449d3f916ef4e&X-Amz-SignedHeaders=host&x-amz-checksum-mode=ENABLED&x-id=GetObject" alt="The Miscellaneous tab of the Seeker Agent's Context page in Console, showing an empty Miscellaneous Context Instructions field above a Merge Tags reference listing the year, month, day, country, region, and city tags." />

<img src="https://fdr-prod-docs-files-public.s3.us-east-1.amazonaws.com/apologist.docs.buildwithfern.com/f408098da2948dbf2fce0309113273dd37dcc853dc7d13e7901dfef54543576a/docs/assets/images/console/agent-context-miscellaneous-tab-dark.png?X-Amz-Algorithm=AWS4-HMAC-SHA256&X-Amz-Content-Sha256=UNSIGNED-PAYLOAD&X-Amz-Credential=AKIA6KXJSKKNFOCF7G4B%2F20260806%2Fus-east-1%2Fs3%2Faws4_request&X-Amz-Date=20260806T092849Z&X-Amz-Expires=604800&X-Amz-Signature=67f65c7dc5039bf2033259d96074d1b3d41c500bcea8503f1d21529dfaca2a79&X-Amz-SignedHeaders=host&x-amz-checksum-mode=ENABLED&x-id=GetObject" alt="The Miscellaneous tab of the Seeker Agent's Context page in Console, showing an empty Miscellaneous Context Instructions field above a Merge Tags reference listing the year, month, day, country, region, and city tags." />

**Miscellaneous Context Instructions** is where date and location awareness comes from, and it carries the widest set of merge tags of any field on these pages.

Unlike the Language and Scripture fields, this one starts empty, and an empty field means the Agent receives none of this context at all. That is why an Agent with nothing here will confidently state the wrong date if asked: with no `{date}` tag reaching it, the only date it has is the one implied by its training data.

Write plain instructions and place the tags inside them, for example:

```
## CURRENT CONTEXT:
- Today's date is {date}.
- The user is in {city}, {region}, {country}.
- Use this only when the question depends on the current date or the user's location.
```

The last line matters. Supplying a tag makes the information available; it does not tell the Agent when the information is relevant.

Location tags resolve to an empty string when the user's location cannot be determined, which leaves a sentence such as "The user is in , , ." in the prompt. Phrase location instructions so they still read sensibly when the values are missing, or keep location on its own line rather than mixed into a sentence you rely on.

#### Save And Verify Against Real Questions

Select **Save Changes** on each page you changed. Each of the three pages saves independently, so a change on Knowledge is not saved by pressing Save on Context.

Then open the Agent's live URL and test the settings you touched:

* Ask a question whose answer depends on today's date, to confirm the `{date}` tag is reaching the Agent.
* Ask a question, then a vague follow-up such as "why?", to confirm **Max Memories** is carrying the conversation.
* Ask a question you know your sources cover, and use **View Sources** on the response to confirm passages are being retrieved under your current threshold.

## Expected Result

The Agent receives the right amount of source material and conversation history for its purpose, knows the date and location when a question depends on them, and handles language and scripture the way your instructions describe.

## Merge Tag Reference

Merge tags are written in single braces and are replaced with real values at the moment the Agent answers. Each field accepts only the tags listed for it, and the tab shows its own list beneath the text area.

| Tag          | Resolves to                                      | Available in                   |
| ------------ | ------------------------------------------------ | ------------------------------ |
| `{language}` | The language the user is working in | Language, Miscellaneous |
| `{bible}`    | The Bible translation in use                     | Scripture, Miscellaneous       |
| `{passages}` | The source passages retrieved for the prompt | Source Handling, Miscellaneous |
| `{year}`     | The current year                                 | Miscellaneous                  |
| `{month}`    | The current month name                           | Miscellaneous                  |
| `{day}`      | The current day number                           | Miscellaneous                  |
| `{date}`     | The full date written out, such as June 10, 2026 | Miscellaneous                  |
| `{time}`     | The current time of day                          | Miscellaneous                  |
| `{country}`  | The user's country, if available                 | Miscellaneous                  |
| `{region}`   | The user's region, if available                  | Miscellaneous                  |
| `{city}`     | The user's city, if available                    | Miscellaneous                  |
| `{timezone}` | The user's timezone, if available                | Miscellaneous                  |

Date and time tags are resolved in the user's own timezone when it is known, and in the server's timezone otherwise. The four location tags resolve to an empty string when the value is unavailable.

## Cost

Three settings on these pages add per-prompt cost, and they stack:

| Setting                              | Cost                                                       |
| ------------------------------------ | ---------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Enable Live Web Search** | An additional credit on every prompt while enabled |
| **Persist Conversation Sources** | An additional 2 credits on every prompt while enabled |
| **Max Sources** and **Max Memories** | No fixed per-prompt charge, but both enlarge every request |

Turn the two toggles on where the Agent's purpose calls for them, and leave them off elsewhere. Neither charges only when used.

## Troubleshooting

* **The Agent states the wrong date.** **Miscellaneous Context Instructions** is empty or has no `{date}` tag. An empty field sends no date context, and the Agent falls back to what its training data implies.
* **The Agent does not cite sources it should have found.** Lower the **Relevance Threshold**, then confirm **Max Sources** is above 0 and that `{passages}` is still present in **Source Handling Instructions**.
* **The Agent cites material that is barely related.** Raise the **Relevance Threshold** before reducing **Max Sources**. The threshold removes weak matches; the cap only removes the ones ranked lowest.
* **Follow-up questions are answered as if they were the first.** **Max Memories** is 0 or very low. Raise it, and turn on **Persist Conversation Sources** if follow-ups also lose the source material.
* **The domain and instruction fields under Live Web Search are greyed out.** Turn on **Enable Live Web Search** first.
* **A location sentence renders with gaps.** The location tags resolved to empty strings because the user's location was not available. Rephrase so the sentence survives missing values.
* **A tab shows an upgrade notice and the fields are read-only.** Instruction editing is not included in your team's current plan. The Knowledge tabs additionally require custom sources on the plan.
* **The Behavior, Knowledge, and Context pages are missing.** The Agent has the Responders capability turned on, so this configuration lives on each Responder instead.
